Prolonged Exposure Therapy is a highly effective treatment for trauma based difficulties and is a trauma-focused C.B.T, with a long standing evidence base for it’s efficacy. It aims to ease the symptoms of P.T.S.D and trauma related difficulties, through a programme of repeated, supported exposure to desensitise the brain’s threat system.
The symptoms of trauma are deeply distressing, and are a normal and natural response to the brain experiencing extreme shock or trauma. It can feel like you are losing your mind and that fear has become your most familiar companion.
In this approach you learn, with gentle support, how to face your fears; increasing your ability to cope with stressors and triggers, and enabling you to regain your sense of control over your daily activities. Being able to function better on a day to day basis, without being controlled by fear is a core aim of this therapy. The confidence that can be gained by developing an improved ability to discern accurately the safety of daily situations, can lead to an overall sense of having reclaimed your life.
